A group of seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was behind attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
